Microsclerotherapy for thread veins

Microsclerotherapy is the gold standard procedure used for the removal of unsightly surface thread veins, surface and spider veins on the legs. It is safe and very effective. The cause of these veins is not clearly known but they affect more than 50% of the population. It involves injections with a very fine needle of a sclerosing drug, which irritates the lining of the veins causing the walls to stick together. Blood stops flowing through the treated veins and is directed back to the deeper veins. Although it is extremely rare for the treated veins to re-develop, new veins can develop over the ensuing years.A small amount of bruising can occur, causing the area to appear worse before improving. In my experience 60 – 70% percent of veins treated at any one session usually disappear and most or all vessels treated during the course of microsclerotherapy will be removed. Although it is extremely rare for the treated veins to re-develop, new veins can develop over the ensuing years.

After the treatment we recommend the following:

  • Wear compression stockings day and night for 2-3 days and then during the day for a further 10 days.
  • Avoid high impact exercise for 14 days.
  • Avoid strong sun exposure for 4 weeks as this will increase the risk of pigmentation marks.
  • Avoid excessive temperatures (very hot bats, saunas etc.)
  • Avoid leg waxing for up to 6 weeks.
